Subject-verb agreement is one of the first things you learn in English class:
“My friend is Japanese.” (singular)
“My friends are Japanese.” (plural)
In this English lesson, you’re going to learn a few more advanced cases of subject-verb agreement that confuse many learners.

everybody / anybody / somebody / nobody

everyone / anyone / someone / no one

These subjects are all singular!
“Everyone have problems.”
“Everyone has problems.”
“I don’t know if anybody is in the office right now.”
“How do you react if someone gives you a compliment?”
“Nobody likes the new English teacher.”

club / team / family / army

These subjects are also singular, even though they are talking about a group of people.
“My family is visiting me for the holidays.”
“The basketball team has a new coach.”
Note: In British English “family” and “team” are often plural.

police

Usually, “police” is plural:
“The police are investigating the murder.”
“Police have arrested three suspects.”
To talk about an individual member of the police, we can say policeman or policewoman - or the gender-neutral term police officer.

people / children / men / women / mice / feet

These words are irregular plural nouns (nouns that are not formed by adding -s) and they take the plural form of the verb:
“Our children are very well-behaved.”
“The people like the new president.”
“Men don’t usually enjoy shopping for clothes.”
“My feet are cold.”

both of / a few of / many / several

These words always take the plural form of the verb:
“Both of my brothers are older than me.”
“A few of these products have defects.”
“Many of the houses in this neighborhood don’t have garages.”
“Several of the students aren’t going to pass.”

half of / a third of / 40% of / some / most

These words can be singular OR plural depending on what follows them!
“Half of the students are from another country.”
“Half of the class is from another country.”
“Some of these facts are incorrect.”
“Some of this information is incorrect.”
“40% of the people don’t support the new law.”
“40% of the country doesn’t support the new law.”

Is “data” singular or plural?

There is a debate about the word “data”! Technically, data is plural (the singular form is “datum”). However, in common usage, people often treat “data” like “information” – as an uncountable noun, which takes the singular form. So both forms are correct: “The data is accurate” and “The data are accurate.” You can read more about the “data debate” here and here.

STATIVE VERB

Stative verbs are not usually used in the continuous tenses.

Common stative or non-continuous verbs in English

Stative verbs are very common. In fact, some of the most common verbs in English refer to states, so review them carefully.
Here is a list of the most common stative verbs in English. These verbs are not usually used in the continuous form.
Verbs referring to mental and emotional states
Believe, doubt, feel, imagine, know, dislike, love, hate, prefer, realise, recognise, remember, see, suppose, think, understand, want, wish
Verbs referring to the uses of the senses
Appear, hear, look, see, seem, smell, taste
Communicating and causing reactions
Agree, deny, impress, please, satisfy, astonish, disagree, mean, promise, surprise
Other verbs
Be, belong, concern, consist, contain, depend, deserve, fit, include, involve, lack, matter, measure, need, owe, own, possess, weigh
This rule can be quite confusing for ESL students because even native speakers break them often. What’s more, some of these verbs have multiple meanings and continuous forms are possible with some of these meanings.
For example, the verbs smell, taste and sound are stative when they describe the condition of the subject. They are actions when they refer to what the subject does.
  • The fish tasted awful. (NOT The fish was tasting awful.)
Here the verb tasted describes a condition of the subject. The fish wasn’t good.
  • I was tasting the soup.
Here the continuous form is possible because we are talking about something that the subject does.
  • The flowers smell wonderful. (NOT The flowers are smelling wonderful.)
The continuous form is not possible in this case because we are talking about a condition or state of the subject.
  • She was smelling the flowers.
The continuous forms are possible in this case because we are talking about something that the subject does.
Some stative verbs are never used in the continuous form.
Study the examples given below.
  • I believe that a good education is essential for success in life. (NOT I am believing that a good education…)
  • I love my parents. (NOT I am loving my parents.)
  • I think that the new airport is a bad idea because of its adverse impact on the environment. (NOT I am thinking that …)
  • I support free education because many poor students need help. (NOT I support free education because many poor students are needing help.)

What is a sentence?

A sentence is a group of words that ...
  • begins with a capital letter
  • contains a subject (except imperatives)
  • contains a verb
  • contains one complete idea (an independent clause)
  • ends with a punctuation mark
You are going to learn how to write sentences step by step.  To learn about subjects, you need to know nouns and pronouns.  To write verbs correctly, you need to know regular and irregular forms of the tenses.  To learn what an independent clause is (and what it is NOT), you need to learn about fragments and run-on sentences and how to avoid them.

Basic Sentence Patterns

In this lesson, you will learn the elements of a sentence.  There are 5 basic sentence patterns in English.  Before we start this lesson (or after class in the lab), go to these 5 websites.    Click the buttons on the screen at each site to see sentences with these patterns.
