Tareque Masud’s films brought laurels for the country on a number of occasions. And he left us at a time when his creative ideas and vision were coming into full play on celluloid. As for Ashfaque Munier, he was the most versatile man on our video journalism scene. Munier was a university teacher, a cameraman of international repute and, above all, decent human being loved by all. Of course, Tareque Masud was also very popular among his friends and fans.
An NGO leader in a television interview very rightly said that she was more angry and aggrieved than shocked by the deaths of the two highly talented men. The prime minister and the leader of the opposition took almost no time to express their shock after hearing the most terrible news of the year. There is no doubt that they had to say something about the deaths of two luminaries that cast a pall of gloom over the whole nation. But is it really enough to say a few words to console the bereaved families?
We are clearly not doing enough to prevent fatal accidents on the highways. We still do not know how many people have so far been killed on the Dhaka-Aricha Highway alone. But it is really disturbing to know that on an average 34 people are killed every day in accidents across the country. If the trend continues we will soon have to replace the term accident with ‘plain murder’ as most the mishaps could have been avoided with better traffic management.
Setting up a probe body after something goes awfully wrong is an age-old practice which produced no tangible results in the past. The government has to go beyond it to keep things under control.
All lives are equally valuable. We want the decision makers to come out of their traditional mode of thinking and act quickly to eliminate the risks associated with travelling on our highways. Any delay in this respect would mean more loss of lives.Courtesy:
